The county of Leicestershire was named after it’s main city, Leicester. Leicestershire is the home of three universities; The University of Leicester, Loughborough University and De Montford University, all of which are very highly regarded accross the UK.
Leicestershire is also the home of Leicester City Football Club, a former Premier League football team currently playing in the Coca Cola Championship.
In 2001 the population of Leicestershire was just over 600,000, excluding the city of Leicester, the counties biggest and most populated town/city. Leicestershire is situated next to the counties of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, Nothamptonshire and Warwickshire. The county hall of Leicestershire is in Glenfield, around three miles for the county city of Leicester.
